Yes, it's too bad these dealers bully us into using them even for aftermarket parts, but that's business in America. I too would not want to have the burden of proof against a hostile dealer.
As for Patrick BMW (OK I really shouldn't post this but I haven't had much sleep in the last 24 hours and judgement is lacking). I'm going there today or Monday to rip them a new asshole. I usually have Leo (Midwest Motorsport) do the work on my car, but one Saturday I heard a clunking noise that was really bothering me. Patrick is open on Saturday, Leo isn't. I take the car there, tell them "I think it's a wheel bearing, can you diagnose and resolve?" Well about an hour later they tell me it's my 'Aftermarket exhaust' hitting against my 'Aftermarket swaybar'. OK, so did they fix it? No! They tell me I should remove the pieces or find a muffler shop to resolve. OK, I go to a muffler shop, "nope, there aren't even any scratches to indicate the exhaust hitting the sway bar, maybe it's the half-shaft".
Car goes to Leo, it's the half-shaft. Leo says it was wearing fast, "had about 10 minutes left on it". So, not only did they do a poor diagnostic job (based on their prejudices against my modifications rather than the facts) but they put me at risk and denied their business owners of considerable revenue. The short of it car now functions without fault, but Patrick is the closest dealer to me and I am less confident in their abilities to service my NEW BMW. ;-).
It's really important that we support the independant shops. The independants help keep the marketplace competitive and often help keep the factory supported dealers honest.
If we don't support the independants we will have no alternatives. You think they're bullies now, just keep watching.

p.s. This really isn't fair that I post this with MY side of the story only, I know better. But it's completely factual and I assure you that I will post any feedback/response from Patrick BMW.
