: Can anyone validate this claim, about valve retainers?
: www.racepad.com says this, regarding 1995 M3:
: "Early production (pre 10/95) versions used softer valve retainers. These should be checked around 50K miles. BMW underestimated the wear on these and the softer metal is prone to wear. A worn valve retainer will result in catastrophic engine failure. The valve will drop through into the cylinder and whack the piston to bits and bend the valve stems."
I have a 4/95 M3 and was worried, so I talked to numerous people. If you don't track or race your car, then the retainers are ok. If you track or race the car have them looked at or replaced. I have tracked my car numerous times and when I had the car worked on because of an over revv they said the retainers looked fine. I had them replaced with the titaium retainers only because the head was off the car. If your car has alot of miles 60+ and you want to track the car I would have them replaced. My 0.02 worth.
