Check the harness that connects from the Kenwood to the factory harness. Kenwood head unit harnesses have a wire that is suppose to connect to the factory power antenna wire in cases where the car's radio antenna is to be turned on when the radio is on and off when the radio is off. You don't need it to be connected since the antenna for the M3 is in the rear window and is always on. For radio use, all you need is for the antenna plug to be plugged into the back of the Kenwood deck. The power antenna wire coming from the Kenwood should be one of the blue ones - not the amp remote turn-on wire but the other blue one (maybe blue/white?).

This may or may not be the problem, but it's all I can think of right now.

: Hi, Im having a problem with my headunit and the rear defroster. I have a Kenwood Excelon Mask headunit and when Im listening to the radio and hit the rear defroster button; the radio becomes static. What can be the problem? Thanks for any advice.
