I just had this happen to me this weekend on my '99 with 10k miles. The only thing different about this fill up was that I ran down to a range of 40 miles instead of filling up at a range of about 60 miles.
: I've been told the fuel tank sensor doesn't like seeing only three or four gallons (or less) in the tank. For some reason it upsets the fuel gauge and the OBC. Also, I've been told its not a good idea to leave the ignition key turned to any position other than off.
: I'm not sure of any of this information, just passing along what I've heard. I haven't experienced any of the fuel gauge or OBC problems myself on my '99 M3 but I always re-fill with gas when I get down below about half a tank. Maybe that's why!

: : When I filled up the car today (16 gallons), the Fuel Guage and OBC acted as if I only had about 4 gallons (guage stayed at 1/4, with an 85 mile range). About 1/2 hour later, the guage started rising and within an hour was up to full. After about an hour and a half the OBC started reading 300+ miles.
: : The car is relatively new 99, with ~6K miles.
: : Anyone else had any problems with the gas guage? I'll have BMW check it out, but curious if it is something others have encountered.
: : Thanks
