While M3 rear gears are pretty tame the transmission gearing is quite low. First gear is a 4.20:1 ratio. First gear with a Muncie 4sp or th350/400 in a GTO is in the 2.5:1 range making low rear end gears mandatory.
The nice part about the M3 arrangement is it gives good off the line gearing without making top gear too nervous with rpms even without an overdrive 5th gear. If anyone complains that there are too many rpms in top gear in an M3 they should go for a ride in a 4.XX geared muscle car at highway speeds.
