The clunking noise is probably the pads shifting
in the calipers. I had a set of Porterfield R4
race pads that clanked like the ghost of Jacob Marley. I remedied it by cutting strips from a tin can lid and wrapping them around the edge of
the backing plate where there was about half a millimeter of slop.I also had to grind some corners of the backing plate down to fit.
Some Porterfield pads are "custom" sized by taking
an existing pad and trimming it down to the desired size. I don't think this is a high-precision machine shop.
