: With the selector in A position the transmission shifts automatically. With the selector in the M position you get kind of a half manual compromise. You put the car in L for 1st ( it think), 2 for 2nd and so on. Kind of a tiptronic. I drove one on a 96 328 and it was kind of cool although there was some lag with the shifts, maybe I was doing it wrong.
