Six months ago, I could not have agree with you more, but when it came to buying one,I wound up buying a silver '97 M3 LUX! It all comes down to personal taste. Yes, I scrapped the wood center console trim (it was a bit much) for a genuine napa leather wrapped piece, not the vinyl piece found on most M3's. I like the wood shift knob, door handles and trim piece above the glove box. The lateral support is slightly better in the Vader seats, but since I do not track my car on a regular basis, who cares? IMO, the LUX seats are WAY more comfortable on road trips. Plus they are power.
I was going to get a rear wing, the standard M3 side skirts, and the mesh grille, but have recently decided that I really like the looks of the lux parts with the contour rims. The lines are just sooo smooth with out the other parts. The "slat" front grille did bother me because you could see the verticle pieces which help brace the slats, but break up the lines. I just painted the verticle pieces black so you can't see them. The slats seem to visually widen the looks of the front of the car, which I really like. The only piece I plan to add is the lower front lip. And Who out there KNOWS that the lux cars are heavier? And if they were like 100 lbs heavier, again, who cares? Have you weighed each model or are you making assumptions? The lux is the perfect sleeper car too. people don't know about the LUX M3's think it is a regular 3-series with big tires. Overall, the standard M3's are fun to look at, but when it came to buying one, my opinion was the lux looks more classy and is more comfortable to drive on a daily basis.
