You are not supposed to really hit it with your heel it is supposed to be the side of your foot. So they call it sole/sole.

If you look at the brake actually leans toward the Gas so that it is easier to heel/toe.

Read on the books or watch a video of the is set up pretty well...don't know if it is the best...but it is also a lot easier to do it with tennis shoes.
