You lose a lot of the power which is generated at the crank through the pulleys. These pulleys power all your electrical systems (i.e. radio, A/C, Power Steering, etc.) When these systems are in use, they sap power from the pulleys, causing less to reach your wheels. You can eliminate a little power loss by not turning on A/C (thats a biggy). Also lighter pulleys help.
