i did the same to my 99 M3, i was running 3rd gear up to redline and i misshifted and dropped it into 2nd. my engine check light went on and i wasnt sure what happened except for that and that the engine didnt quite sound the same. i actually drove the car about 4K miles after before getting it fixed. i was too panicked to go get the car checked out immediately. then the problem got worse; after letting the car idle for more than 20 or 30 seconds the engine would rumble and would accelerate very jerky. so i took it to a mechanic, the computer read that i reved the engine up to 8135RPM. a compression check showed that i was running about 1/2 compression on 3 of my cylinders. i took the car to a mechanic near me and he had to replace 8 bent valves and a camshaft, it ran me 3,500 dollars. 55 dollars for each valve and 750 for the camshaft. the car was in the shop for 2 weeks, but now it runs great and i learned a crazy lesson: inexperience and racing dont mix.
