The CPO warranty booklet which came with my car says that electrical systems are covered. But then it says that the warranty is not all-inclusive, and that certain accessories such as telephones, are not covered. It recommends contacting the dealer for clarification.

You could probably get the sales person to agree to a good deal on purchase + installation of a factory approved alarm. Since your potential purchase is a 98, you get the less expensive alarm than is specified for pre-98's. I believe the going discount price for yours is $264 from pacificbmw and the like, but that's not an installed price.

The installation is really quite simple, but you may not feel like messing with it. My dealer mechanic said he'd do it at home for 50 bucks. I'd guess that the normal dealer install time is two hours, or approx 150 bucks.

So, since you're not a DIY'er, see if you can get them to cut a deal. Also verify the warranty on the item. (It includes a 1-year warranty). From what the archives here say, you should think 2ice about getting an aftermarket unit installed... unless you need all the fancy gizmos like proximity detection, tilt sensor, window close/open, paging, tax preparation, etc.
