In Reply to: Does bad water pump give warning when going bad? posted by Paranoid on June 12, 2000 at 20:05:02:

According to my mechanic, in some cases, a failing plastic water pump impeller can give some warning - increased coolant temp (but not into red) during sustained high rpm cruising. In most cases, however, it fails suddenly and the temp needle will climb quickly and engine needs to be shut off and hood raised ASAP.

: Or does it just blow suddenly?

: I have a 9/95 production, and after reading a recent message from someone with a 10/95 with a confirmed plastic impellar, it did wonder to fuel my paranoia... pumpafobia?
: What really worries me is that it will blow without warning and require towing or something.

: Do these pumps usually provide any warning that they're going to blow?

: Also, is there any way that BMW NA (or other) can determine for a fact if my car has the plastic impellar based on my VIN#? Shouldn't BMW have a record of exactly which VIN was last to be loaded with plastic?

: Thanks...
