You do NOT want to drive car after water pump failure even after engine cools. If you do, pieces of the distintegrating impeller will circulate around water jacket and radiator, resulting in much labor cost to get them out.

: Once it blows the engine will never be runnable at normal temp with the damaged pump?

: I would say going straight to red can be considered a warning if it cools down enough afterwards to be able to drive it home.

: Thanks for the info.

:
: : : Or does it just blow suddenly?

: : : I have a 9/95 production, and after reading a recent message from someone with a 10/95 with a confirmed plastic impellar, it did wonder to fuel my paranoia... pumpafobia?
: : : What really worries me is that it will blow without warning and require towing or something.

: : : Do these pumps usually provide any warning that they're going to blow?

: : : Also, is there any way that BMW NA (or other) can determine for a fact if my car has the plastic impellar based on my VIN#? Shouldn't BMW have a record of exactly which VIN was last to be loaded with plastic?

: : : Thanks...
