Rattling/Hissing noise b/t shifts..pls help (long) (archive)

This is a problem I've been trying to figure out for a while now and I was wondering if anyone had some insight before I go to the dealer and get screwed over.

My 95 (out of warranty) makes a rattling/hissing noise between shifts (above 2500 rpms..not below) and during enging braking (again above 2500 rpms).

I had my cats replaced under warranty last summer which quieted the problem but it's back.

I'm thinking that it could also be my exhaust which is an aftermarket stainless steel that the previous owner put on 3 years ago.

Does anyone suggest replacing the exhaust to see what happens? Replace the cats again?
