First of all, your 98 is OBD-II, so you won't be able to just pop a chip in- you'll have to either send in your ECU for reprogramming or purchase the Jim C. Shark Injector to do it yourself (waiting list is probably months long, tho).

Adding an intake helps ANY car. Adding a software reprogram will help any car with an intake make better use of the increased airflow/cooler air. Software also improves efficiency of burn, removes speed limiter, etc. etc. Read thru the archives.

In short- adding the software and intake WILL help your auto trans car. But you should also consider the Dinan auto tranny performance chip (which IS a pop-in solution). They offer a couple of different set-ups which move shift points higher on the rev band and shift harder.
