It is most likely your alternator. A dead battery alone will not shut down a car while running, because the alternator keeps working. A dead battery plus a bad alternator will. Test by starting car and while running, pull the battery neg cable. If the car stalls, your alternator is bad. $120 seems about right for BMW battery--don't know about alternator.

Good luck

: freeway, I felt a power surge like it was low on gas (which it wasn't) and then it shut off... I put the hazards on and it slowly started to dim until the whole instrument panel went out. I had it towed to a shop and they changed the battery (which the previous owner had put the wrong one in)and it started up... QUestion: They say I may need a new alternator exact words were the amps are low...might want to change the alternator. They want to charge me $120 for Factory BMW battery and $310-395 for an alternator, and 120 for labor... does that sound right? and could there be anything else wrong? i am hoping they are not misdiagnosing the problem... TIA
