A straight tail pipe test will do as opposed to the near harassment that takes place by the mechanics who feel they were mistreated as children and need to get back at society by asking for an EO number, sticker, box the product came in-while reading the manual everytime you pull in a car that at least looks kept up.
FWIW, I think the JC software, though not smog "legal" will still pass CA smog (definitely visual as you can't see software upgrades) and I'm 90% sure of the tail pipe as the SMOG runs are what at idle and at 3000rpm cruise, which most of the performance driving doesn't take place at anyway.
And for what the software does, optimizing fuel/timing curves for 92 octane means a more complete fuel burn which means its better environmentally.
But of course to be safe, I'm personally going to re-download the factoryy software the day before.
