The centrifugal 'fan' came apart inside the blower. They spin extremely fast and to suddenly stop (from a seized bearing) could easily cause one to come apart esp. considering it probably moved and hit the casing.
The other things that kills them is any junk getting into your intake. A small stone hitting the impellers spinning at 50,000 rpm is recipe for disaster.
