I do a cold check to see how much oil is totally in the system.

A hot check tells you roughly what's in the pan when the engine is going.

So IMHO, at cold you should be a mm or so above full and hot, somewhere slightly above middle.

Anyone else? I know the manual is pretty specific but I don't have it handy.
