Pull the knob off and check to see if maybe the insulation on the wires are rubbed bare. If so, they could be shorted out against the shifter causing the small lamp not to light up.

Or if you have jerked the knob off while shifting (pulling second gear) it may have all but broken one of the wires feeding the small lamp.

If none of the above, most likely the small lamp is burned out.
