I know the post '96 3-series with VANOS do have fault code(s) for this system. I'm sure your Bosch M3.3.1 has something similar since both system work the same way.

The DME is the controller of the VANOS system so its the DME itself that stores fault codes... so yeah, it can communicate to the DIS or MoDIC via the 20pin diagnostic port.

On the normal or off setting, the VANOS solenoid is deactivated and intake timing is retarded. If there was like an open or short on the solenoid wiring, it will not activate and timing will be fixed throughout the whole rpm band and will experience a loss of power.
