: Will a diagnostic computer pickup a VANOS Error? My 95 M3 is in the shop and the mechanic has informed me that their computer came up with a VANOS error... Does a Faulty vanos output any error to the diagnostic port? Does anyone know the characteristics of a faulty VANOS unit... or is it just the noise. Up until the day my car shutdown on the freeway I didnot notice any problems

A bad Vanos will often result in rough idle too. There is a TSB out on early production Vanos units failing due to a jamming of the piston in its bore. The piston can be replaced with one that will not jam, and it can be done without replacing the entire Vanos unit--which is a big job and requires know how. If your mechanic is not experienced with these units I would not let him work on it.
