Going down 87 south towards NYC a black 2001 740i with the sports package (nice!) catches up to me and wants to play. It was 6:30am and the roads were quiet. We jockyed back and forth between 80-120mph for about 10 miles, I had a coworker in the passenger seat and this guy pulls up on the pasenger side with his window down and yells "that car isn't as fast as you think it is! This is a 2001 and I'm only in third!" (we were doing about 75 at this point). Taking it as a challenge, I put mine in third and we both nail it at the same time (BTW he had steptronic). I have to tell you, the sound of both engines screaming was great. From the start I SLOWLY pulled away from him and continued to do so through fourth. I let up shortly after that because of some traffic. We did this a couple of times with the same result.I have no illusions that if we had kept going, he would have overtaken me, but it was fun. We stopped at a rest area and he said that my M3 is probably quicker off the line because of weight. I smiled (a warm grandmotherly smile), complimented him on his car and especially the look of the sport package that he said his kids made him get (clears all around and 18" wheels), and thanked him for the race. I failed to mention the $30,000 price difference in cars, the fact that I still beat him, the engine size, or the fact that I had a 220lb pasenger. I think taking the high road is best. No matter what, it was still a fun duel.
With all this said and no point in sight, I'll end this drivel with my opinion that the new 740i can really move at speed and that it looks great. I still would have liked to have seen him tangle with a car that costs the same amount. Perhaps an M5?
