You are correct that the old plates were very nice speakers. I had a set of 6.5/1" two-ways installed in my M3. The kickpanels obviously needed a bit of cutting and the woofers were surface mounted. Very nice, warm, musical sound. I also had the UNI-Q's mounted in the rear. As you said, there is a difference from the usual coax's: the woofer cone has an actual hole through the center and the tweeter operates completely seperately from the woofer. The crossovers are also a kick-ass looking set that has a lightbulb for a fuse (blinks on with peak power) if you like to show off your gear. Here's the bad news: 1) My speakers were the old company (European manufacturer) which has now divested themselves of car audio in the US. 2) The new KEF's are made by Coustic, not a particularly great name in any audio circle. 3) The KEF's never worked well and I went through about six crossovers before I threatened legal action and they replaced the old version with newer (Coustic) versions which I sold off right away. They tried to tell me that my warranty "expired" while complaining for over a year for them to fix it. The new speakers did look like quality pieces though.
If you want more info on KEF's check out the link below. personally, however, i would stay away. I'd go with BA 3-ways or Dynaudio 3-ways in the front if you can swing it (I have the Dyn's now). Canton's, as the other post mentioned, are decent as well, particularly if you're sticking with two-ways. I use these for rear fill. Good luck.
