If the lights you are talking about are the 5 green bars that go off (not on) one at a time, then that is the oil service interval and when all 5 green bars go off (which according to BMW will go off one at a time depending on how hard the driver drives the car, under what conditions and about 10kmiles) , it is time for an engine oil change, although most people will change the oils more frequently than what the bars indicate.

The 2 bars (orange or red? i can't remember) on the right of the 5 green bars indicate service maintainance, and when they go off, means it's time for the BMW maintainance program.

All this info can be found in the service manual.
