I bought my 96 M3 used about 2years ago. After only 4 months, I had the dealer replace the transmission for that exact same reason. Since then, I have had no problems at all with the new transmission. I would take the new transmission and then go and enjoy the fact that they fixed it for free. Good luck and happy ///Motoring.

: Took my '99 M3 Coupe (CPO car, 9300 miles, purchased in WI 3 months/3.5K miles ago) to my local dealer the other day (BMW of Bellevue, Seattle area) Car was there for, among other things, a problem with the transmission occasionally popping out of 2nd gear under hard accelleration. I expected it to be a simple adjustment issue.

: Went to pick the car up and was informed that they needed to replace the transmission. Service rep mentioned that this was a "fairly common" problem among M3s, and that BMW had an updated transmission that would solve the problem.

: So my question - anyone else had this problem? Seems strange that my car (build March 99) wouldn't have had the updated transmission design from the factory, since it was built near the end of the E36 production run. On one hand I guess I shouldn't complain, but a tranny replacement after less than 10K miles is a little concerning. Thoughts or suggestions?
