The obvious reason for building an 'Interference' engine is for timing belt breakage. Since the current engines have a chain (which rarely breaks) and the old belted BMW engines were NOT 'Interference' (I know this from personal experience!!!)...My answer (still a guess) is NO, the current E36 M3 motor is NOT an interference design!!!
