In Reply to: Extended Warranty, should I get it? posted by Silver M3 on June 20, 2000 at 00:18:52:

I just had 2 incidents where the warranty kicked in. Around 54k miles I got an engine noise. I would have to find my ticket to see what was replaced, but it took them a week and about 1200.00 in parts to fix it. Timing tensioner ring a bell? They threw on a ac tensioner, all sorts of o rings and whatever else that related at it with Lots and Lots of labor involved and I paid less than 100.00 in parts for belts that weren't covered, there were two of them. At 57k miles my water pump went. My temp went straight up and I had to call bmw's 1 800 #. They had a flatbed on site in 15 minutes. This time they replaced the waterpump, thermostat, and related items, and a dipstick assembly. I ended up spending 225.00 or so on that visit because the thermostat wasn't covered. My typial warranty comes with a 50.00 deductible. Anyway, I didn't have to pay for my warranty, but if I could, I would buy a 200,000 mile warranty. Just knowing that you have, IF you need is a very comforting feeling :) 4k might sound like it's be a bit on the high side, find out the details on what is covered and what isn't, and compare it to something else online. I think edmunds.com has some links. You might find that 4k is a bargain.

: I plan to keep my car after another 2 years of payments, should I get tthe extended warranty? Allison BMW in Mountain View, CA is asking $4000 on a 5 year/ 100,000 mile extended warranty! Please advice!
