: : i've thought about "it lets daddy know if he's going too fast", but she knows what the speedometer is for, plus, she'll know the truth soon enough and i don't want her to look back and remember me bending the truth with her; at the same time i can't possibly be up front about it. does this mean i have to trade in the ///M for a nice minivan?

: I would tell them the truth: you intend to drive the speeds the roads were designed for, but local (and federal) governments have lowered official speed limits in order to get money from people (i.e., a Tax) without having to have a vote on it. Thus, I am avoiding an illegal tax (imho). Civil disobedience has a long and fine history in the US....

... what explaination do you recommend when Daddy says, "SH*T!!!" as his puny Passport 4600 goes off at the same time he sees the cop?
