I'm not sure what makes it happen, but I've had a truck and a car that had clutch chatter. The typical sensation is rather bumpy. The truck did it almost all the time, so I figured that the clutch was defective. It ceased with a new clutch installation.

The car only did occasionally. I figured that its clutch was getting some sort of contamination on it from time to time. Then it would burn off, and the clutch would be smooth again.
