Pickumup in right lane ahead of me... decides he just has to pass (prob in a hurry to get to the Kodiak Tuhbacky store). So, he whips into the left lane ahead of me.
He was far enough ahead that I didn't take it personally. I guess he had some vendetta, though. Prob didn't like my foreign fogs or something like that. Prob couldn't even spell vendetta, either.
A few miles down the road, we're all doing 80 in the left lane, passing slower traffic which, surprisingly, is now in the right lane. This is Tennessee, you know. Pickumup has merged right, and is leading his lane. We in the left lane nonchalantly pass him by.
Since an 18-wheeler a few cars ahead is leading my left lane, and since I like to keep a clear view so I don't hit a busted re-tread in the road, I decide to pass.
So... 5 to 3, signal and merge right, (safely ahead of the pickumup), and take off. After reaching a very brief 105, safely merge back into left lane, coasting back to speed of traffic.
There's a big, slowly curving two-lane ramp ahead, leading onto the interstate highway. I know this ramp well... been driving it over ten years. It's fun to downshift, take the curve, and accelerate down hill onto the interstate.
Meanwhile, pickumup Bubba is way back, leading the right lane.
As usual, the left lane has become the slow lane and the right lane is gaining on us. This is Tennessee you know. So, 5 to 3, signal and merge right again... hitting about 90 down the two-lane ramp to the interstate. I didn't even think 2ice about Bubba back there in the right lane.
As the two ramp lanes slowly combine into one, I coast down a bit, signal left and safely merge into the interstate traffic's righmost lane. We're now going about 75: the prevailing speed of traffic.
But wait! What's that ugly green thing in the passenger mirror? OH NO! It's Dufus, I mean, its Bubba in the pickumup... in a burst of rare inspiration, TRYING TO PASS ME ON THE RIGHT SHOULDER!!
Ok... 5 to 3 again, WOT to redline, and leaving Bubba behind of course... then the limiter activated. Had I more practice, I'd have watched the tach more than Bubba, and gone to 4 sooner. No harm done, though; that's what it's for.
Ok... so 3 to 4 to 5, walk away to 90, then level back off at about 85. While all this was happening, I intentionally drifted left a bit into the open middle lane, giving the pickumup some room, (should he need it). Do you think he needed the room? Nah... in reality, I didn't want hillbilly green all over my fender!
So I merged into the ctr lane at speed of traffic, and he came up behind, flashed the brights 1ce, then merged into the leftmost lane. I let him go on his way.
What a fool that guy was: tring to pass on the shoulder in heavy traffic on an unlit highway!
What a fool I was, to be drawn into that silly crap!
I'm glad I at least had enough sense to call it off when I did.
