Last year, I noticed a loud hissing/rattling sound coming from the exhaust area of my car under hard acceleration and engine braking. Went to the dealer and they replaced the cats under warranty. 8 months later (now) the noise comes back. So I take the car into BMW of San francisco thinking that they would replace the cats again...nope. Told me it was a loose heat shield on my exhaust and they charged me 50 bux to tighten a couple bolts.
I drove it out knowing that the problem would still be there and sure enough it was. Drove back to the dealer and after lots of arguing, they agreed to check it out further. Service manager drives along with me and agrees that the problem is pretty bad.
Two days later, they tell me that they tried replacing the cat but no luck....rattle is still there. Now they say the noise is coming from my after-market exhaust and they're trying to sell me a new stock exhaust for $900 or something crazy like that.

I'd love to get rid of this rattle but would hate to spend 600 bux and find out that the noise is still there. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

(sorry about the long post everyone)
