As badbmw mentioned, this is a common problem. The first time it happend, I was travelling on the freeway, and scraped two large holes through the piece before I was able to stop. The part (51-71-2-250-643) was $70.50 + half an hour of labor to install. If you have ramps or jack stands, it's easy to do it your self. You may need to replace the plastic inserts that are used to hold the screws into the frame (sorry, no part number). Unless the manhole cover was very high, you probably knocked the center piece loose by bumping a curb while parking, the bump in the road
just knocked it free.

: While driving last evening at a fairly high rate of speed my car went over a small bump around a manhole cover on the newly paved road I was on. The bump was not very jarring but a few seconds later I heard a loud rubbing sound and pulled over. A large black plastic piece directly behind the front air dam had come loose and I was able to remove it from under the car. What is this piece? It looks like some kind of cover. Secondly, is this going to be expensive to fix? TIA for your help!
