Unidentified switch found..... (archive)

I was installing the BMW arm rest into my '97 M3 sedan.
I took the orginal center console out along with the cup holders, coin holder, and ashtray.

Underneath all the plastic are wiring for the lighting for both front and rear ashtrays. BUT! i found a taped up switch along with the wiring. The switch looks likes the switches used for the power windows and sunroof. It appears that someone wrapped electrical tape around the switch so the prongs/plugs were not exposed.

Since I am not the original owner of this car, I don't know if this was done by the factory or a PO? what is this switch for?
