Actually, submarining refers to what happens to your body when the vehicle is involved in an accident. With some seats and restraint systems, your lap belt comes off your iliac crest (pelvis) as you slide down your seat toward the steering wheel. When your belt locks, load is applied to your abdomen, which can cause significant internal injuries.
