round canister on pasenger side engine? (m) (archive)

when i start my car in the morning i hear a buzzing/fan sound from the engine compartment. its a black round canister with a hose comming out of it that is attached to the pasanger side engine compartment. it shuts off after a few min. what is it? some kind of emmisions thing?

curious minds need to know.
