The best head units that look pretty stock are the Nakamichi units. The weak link with the Nak's is the tuner, so keep that in mind. Also consider Alpine. You'll get the most improvement by changing the amp which is the weakest part of the POS stereo system. You'll have to see if you can convert the signal from the new head unit to the stock amp... if you're going to keep the weak link.
I want to upgrader the head unit in my 95 M3. I think I have the IBUS unit because I can turn the volume knob to infinity. My big concern is that it looks good in the dash. I do not want a unit with a big black plastic Crutchfield install kit around it.
I am looking at Eclipse, Blaupunk, and Sony.
I mostly listen to the radio, but I want to be able to listen to my Napster CDs :)
