I had a 1985 323i that I bought in Cologne. after getting it back to the states, I switched to Mobil1 15W50 and, because I was commuting 100 miles a day, changed the oil at 20,000 to 25,000 miles with a filter change every 5000 miles. Now I know that this is sacrilege to the 3,000 mile oil changers out there, but after 187,000 miles, I added a pint of oil about every 3000 miles and the engine never had to be opened up; compression was uniform in all 6, the engine ran sweet and I never babied it. Put it thru 2 driving events (not races) at Laguna Seca and Sears point. I'd still be driving it if it hadn't been sideswiped by a jeep. I also used Mobil1 gear oil in the 5 speed and the LS diff.
How much longer will synthetic oil last than regular 20w50? Also, somebody here recommended that I use 0w30 synthetic.. is this a good choice? I drive my car somewhat hard, but i want some oil that will last at least 4k miles, if possible. thanks!
