It goes both ways. There is as much trash talking from the M3 crowd as from the S4 crowd. Another consideration, something that no one has been able to debate, is the performance-per-dollar factor. At around $40,000 out the door, plus $600 for a chip, you can pull mid 13 sec. time slips in the quarter mile. All of this for the same, in most cases less, money than a 330i. Now, this is only in the area of straight line performance. The S4 is such a heavy pig that there needs to be a great suspension and brakes in order to begin to keep up with a stock e36 M3 around a track. Thats where the debate should really be fought. Face it, you can talk all you want about throwing a turbo on an M3, but how much, total, will that end up costing you $50,000+? At that price, your buddy in the S4 could have his suspension and throw on some bigger turbo's while he's at it. At that point he will be seeing 430+hp. There is definately a price to be paid by the S4 owners, and that is weight and weight distribution. There is no real significant way around it.
I own neither vehicles, so that affords me the ability to look past biases. If I were to choose, I would pick an M3, due to the fact that I can't stand the way heavy cars drive.
The next time you encounter an S4 driver with an attitude, just feel confident in the knowledge that you own a much better "all around" sports car.
