The reason they use crimps is for automation and ease of consistant assembly not for strength. Solder is by far the strongets bond.

i'm not sure after reading your post what you did.... you pushed the pin into the connector before you crimped on the wire, and you thought you were screwed and so went out to buy new pins and a new connector? you could have removed the pins from the connector. the pins are common AMP mfg pins and a cheap AMP pin removal tool could have take the pin out easily.

soldering... airplanes and cars do not use solder for wire harnesses - they use very good crimp connections to connect the wire to the pins. solder creates stress concentrations that are not suitable for vibration levels seen in automotive and aerospace application. go look at any of the connectors on your bmw's wire harness - none of them are soldered.
