If I understand your post, the 97 has more torque than the 96? As for mods, I was planning on installing a chip, intake and exhaust systems. I imagine that should not be a problem for 97's or 98's.
Also, do you expect the value of E46 M3's to decline following the release of the E46 M3?

i opted for a '97 since i wasn't planning on too many mods.

- i like the updated climate controls.
- the 3.2L gives a little more torque compared to the 3.0 (no more HP though)

since i'm waiting for a new e46 M3, i figured a '97 may give me the least depreciation when holding for 1-2 years.
