To begin, the stock exhaust on an E36 M3 is very good for a factory unit. If you're looking to add power, or speed, to your car, the exhaust isn't the best choice for the money. European Car did a report a while back, and they actually found that the stock exhaust provided better horsepower figures than several aftermarket exhausts. HOWEVER, there are certain advantages to aftermarket exhausts on these cars. One, you can usually shed quite a few pounds off of your car as the stock one is heavy. Two, if you're looking for a different sound, the exhaust will do it. Three, you can get some shiny new exhaust tips. Personally, I think that the $500-$800 could be better spent elsewhere. I'd go with the intake/software combo, throw on a short shift kit with a clutch stop, and then consider an Under Drive Pulley. (Here comes the fight!) :^) I know someone just posted a series of articles by Steve Dinan explaining why these are bad, but to be honest I have only heard of real problems resulting when a U/D Pulley is used at the same time as a lightweight flywheel. Just my opinion.
