I'm not totally sure but 44 max may simply be the absolute maximum the tire can handle. I believe my Michelin Pilots have a max of like 50lbs but I never pump them up that high. I go with what the manual says.

Some people here have also suggested slightly different pressures between front and back to increase a little more oversteer effect. This would mean running more pressure in the back but I'm not sure about that. Can someone tell me if that is correct?
