That happened to a friend of mine last year, who had a '97 Z28 stolen.

Fortunately, after arguing with the insurance company, they just wrote it off, though the car was technically reparable.

Thieves stripped the car's interior, airbags and sensors, and tires and rims. The front suspension was destroyed too, and the undercarrage looked like it had been driven by a grandmother on crack before the vehicle was relieved of its desired parts.

Have your buddy check the underside, suspension and motor before accepting the car if he's forced to take it back.
