Stereo: Poor radio reception w/Aftermarket Radio (archive)

I recently decided to upgrade the stereo in my E36 M3 (95). My plan was to do this in two stages. First replace the head unit. Then the second stage was to replace the speakers/amps. Anyway, stage one (head unit) was done about 2 months ago. Radio reception was great.

About 2 weeks, ago I proceeded with stage 2. I replaced the speakers and amplifier. Now I get really poor radio reception. There is still a chance it's the antennea connection, but I have checked it twice.

Does the stock amplifier need to be powered on for decent radio reception? Is there some sort of booster in the stock amp?

Any ideas?

Thanks!
-Jeff
