such as the alternator or any electrical systems? I am not very familiar with the M3's engine bay, I just got the car. I thought that the M3 might have more electrical stuff in the engine bay than other cars, that is why I want to know if its a good idea to wash the engine. So I don't need to cover anything in plastic?

go ahead and wash it, you shouldn't hurt it as long as you don't "over do it" i wash mine all the time at those high pressure places to keep it looking good.
