Don't worry about it. I see it all the time not only on E36 but on E46 3-series, E39 5-series, and E38 7-series.

I just hope it is the gas cap and not something else like a purge line cut in half.
If you have a chance, spray some lubricant on the gas cap seal. They tend to dry out causing it to give a feeling of a closed cap when its actually not.
