If the question is money and you don't want to spend a lot on a short shifter I would suggest you buy the cheaper home-made modified shifter that Stygar sells.

I personally have the UUC Competition "EVO" short shifter w/ERK and the stainless steel ball-bearing bushings in my M3 and love it but it does cost more!

UUC's new "Ultimate EVO" short shifter will have an adjustable height feature which should be even better still!

It all depends on what you want and what you are willing or able to pay for a short shifter.
