I too had an after-market radio installed and had all kinds of problems with am/fm reception. The fix was to mount an external antenna because the BMW Radios with several internal antennas that are located throughout the car including the rear window. Go to Antennaworld.com for more information. They have a good diagram and explanation of the problem.

Not the speaker whine part, G-d knows I'm still trying to fix that, but someone mentioned that radio reception is often lost with an aftermarket head unit, because some kind of signal boost is turned off when the stock amp is cut. Does anyone know if this is correct? I too am looking for an answer.
